Lipoedema Management

Here at Fortis Health & Wellbeing, we offer comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment support for people living with lipoedema — a chronic condition involving abnormal fat distribution and discomfort in the limbs. Our approach combines clinical assessment, symptom management, rehabilitation strategies and tailored support plans to help you live with confidence, mobility, and comfort.

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a long-term condition characterised by the abnormal build-up of fat cells, usually in the legs and sometimes the arms, but typically not affecting the hands or feet. It most commonly affects women and may run in families. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle alone, and standard weight loss alone does not resolve it.

People with lipoedema often describe:

  • Heaviness or discomfort in the limbs

  • Symmetrical enlargement of the legs or arms

  • Tissue that is soft and may bruise easily

  • Changes in limb shape that can worsen over time

  • Symptoms that increase with heat, activity, or fatigue

How We Can Help

While there is currently no cure for lipoedema, early and supportive management can make a meaningful difference to quality of life. At Fortis, we take a personalised, holistic approach, which may include:

Specialist Assessment

Your initial consultation focuses on understanding your history, symptoms, and how lipoedema affects your daily life and mobility. We will also consider any overlapping conditions such as lymphoedema or oedema and differentiate them clinically.

Compression Management

Compression garments or bandaging can help reduce pain, give support to affected tissues, and improve limb symmetry and function. We work with patients to choose and fit the most appropriate options for their needs.

Manual Lymphatic Techniques

Where appropriate, techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage may help alleviate discomfort and support tissue fluid movement.

Self-Care and Education

We provide guidance on symptom management at home — including skincare, safe activity advice, pacing strategies and lifestyle considerations to support long-term wellbeing.

Emotional and Psychological Support

Lipoedema can affect body image, confidence and mental wellbeing. We can support you in accessing appropriate resources and collaborate with other professionals where emotional support is needed.

Exercise and Movement Guidance

Low-impact exercise and bespoke movement programmes can help improve comfort, circulation, and mobility. Activities such as walking, swimming, yoga or water-based exercise may be recommended along with graded, tailored plans which we can support you with through our multi-disciplinary team.
